And many lay in sackcloth and ashes (Est 4,3)
Charcoal on pinewood, paper, knife, sackloth.
In the Psalms and in this verse from the book of Esther, the sackcloth and ashes are related to death and darkness, a metaphor for what happens beyond the boundary of life and how the individual deal with it. For that reason the pine wood, with all its connotations, has been treated with coal dust and the piece is placed so that the knife is at the level of my own eyes: 171cm.
