Work in progress
The project Ascetisch Paysage is another branch of my body of work around the individual and the landscape that he perceives and inhabits. The title condenses the objective of the project: to ask myself what constitutes the concept of contemporary landscape and how to reach a minimum, essential and ascetic expression of it through sculpture, drawing and painting, investigating this field from the architectural, geographical and historical context in which landscape was born as an autonomous pictorial genre, as a consequence of the irruption of Protestantism in the current territory of northern Belgium and the Netherlands.
The title, Ascetisch Paysage —half Dutch, half French— would be translated into English as “ascetic landscape” and through that bilingual pun I intended to also evidence the two parties in conflict of that time, with the Dutch Calvinists in the north and Catholics francophones in the south. The consequences of that conflict survive in Belgium and the Netherlands, from the Catho- lic south to the Protestant north, and it is their footprints that I am about to explore.
